Designed and developed by Messerschmitt starting as Projekt 1065 in 1939, the Me 262 became the world's first operational jet-powered fighter aircraft. It first entered service in 1944, and although its revolutionary design meant it was faster than almost all prop-driven fighter aircraft of the time, its impact was limited due to the relatively low number produced overall and its late entry into the war.
